duPont Winner “Philly D.A.” returns to the news

From “Philly D.A.”

In a midterm election that broke surprisingly well in favor of Democrats, self-identified progressive candidates also bucked expectations, winning key seats that have helped keep the congressional party margins razor-thin.

But earlier this week in Philadelphia, a Republican state legislature voted to impeach the city’s progressive District Attorney, Larry Krasner, whose tumultuous entrance into Philadelphia politics was covered by the duPont-winning series, “Philly D.A.”

The impeachment was announced on grounds that Krasner had committed “misbehavior in office,” with Republican lawmakers blaming his progressive criminal justice policies for worsening violent crime in Philadelphia. Krasner has defended his record, saying in a statement that “history will harshly judge this anti-democratic authoritarian effort to erase Philly’s votes.”

In 2021, PBS and Independent Lens released “Philly D.A.,” an eight-part series that intimately profiled Krasner’s office, his attempts to enact progressive policies, and the intense pushback he received from the community.
